CHAPTER TWELVE

THE RESCUE AT CHELMNO, POLAND,

PHASE III: GETTING TO THE PLANE

By the time the truck and two motorcycles were hidden and thoroughly camouflaged with tree branches behind the cottage, and the group went inside talking about the rescue and events of the last 24 hours, it was time for a midday meal. Everyone was absolutely starved. During this time when everyone else was preoccupied, Meatball had lit the wood burning stove and got busy looking through the kitchen cupboards and a small, narrow food pantry in the corner. He found some jarred foods including borscht (beet soup), sauerkraut, dill pickles, smoked sausage, wholemeal (whole wheat) flour, cooking oil, baking soda, vinegar, and salt. He combined the wholemeal flour with water, a splash of vinegar, a few dashes of salt, a little baking soda, and some cooking oil; despite having no eggs, he was on his way to making fresh bread. In the midst of this activity, Hannah and Vadoma noticed him at work in the kitchen. They were simultaneously amazed and intrigued to see this young man taking the initiative to start cooking for everyone.

Vadoma came up behind Meatball, looking over his shoulder. She asked, “What is a young man doing in the kitchen? We should be the ones cooking the meal now. Is this what it means to be from the future? I’m going to start calling you future boy every time I see you doing something I can’t explain!”

Simultaneously, Hannah was standing pressed snugly to his right side. She asked if she could be of help, batting her eyelids and saying, “May I help you knead the dough, Meatball?” She managed to get her hands in the bowl with his, and the sparks were flying again!

Watching this encounter, Goondoggy rather loudly said, “You all might as well know now, Meatball is the designated cook for all our wild adventures and camping trips. He knows how to cook up something when the pickings are slim to none. That guy can make a tasty meatball out of sawdust, roots, and molasses! And that my friends, is how he came to be known as Meatball by the Bad Love gang!”

The entire group ate together, starting with the borscht and followed by Meatball’s fresh bread with the smoked sausage, sauerkraut, dill pickles, and some assorted nuts that were also bottled up in the pantry. While Sarah Lieb and Mazel Roth both ate, they also kindly fed the two prisoners (Aleksander and Jakub) as everyone else was eating. The two prisoners remained bound while they were fed, but they did get to witness the continued bonding of the group as a whole. There is something about breaking bread together that brings people closer, and to this starving group, this ranked as one of their best ever meals.
